California Legal Document Assistants

A legal document assistant prepares legal paperwork for people who represent themselves. Here is what that means, and what it does not.

What a Legal Document Assistant Can Do

A legal document assistant is registered with the county clerk to provide self-help services at a customer's specific direction. That includes organizing forms from information you provide, and typing and formatting them so they are legible for your review.

What an LDA Cannot Do

An LDA is not an attorney. An LDA cannot give legal advice, choose legal strategy, select forms for you, tell you what your rights are, or represent you in court.

Under California law, every legal document assistant must state: "I am not an attorney. I can only provide self help services at your specific direction."

Registration and Bond

California law requires legal document assistants to register with the county clerk and carry a bond. Write Legal's registered preparer is Tyler Brewer, Kern County registration number 237, expiring March 19, 2028.

Before You Sign Anything

California law requires an LDA to give you certain disclosures and a written agreement before work begins. You also receive a spoken disclosure and a written Notice to Consumer before any contract is signed, and this website does not replace either one. Write Legal gives you those first and explains the fees in writing. Please read them carefully and ask any questions you have.
