Questions
Counties commonly require a Preliminary Change of Ownership Report, form BOE-502-A, filed with each deed at the recorder in the county where the property is located. A deed recorded without one can draw an additional recording fee.
The county documentary transfer tax is set by law at $0.55 for each $500 of value, and a city may add its own. The law says it does not apply to a transfer by gift or because of death. A taxable deed must show the tax due or the exemption on the deed.
